| This is the North Dock and Strand area of Swansea in the
1880s. Apologies for the download time but we think its worth the wait. The map shows the
small courts around High Street Station which were the centre of so many food poisoning
and public health problems throughout the second half of the nineteenth century. The
wonderful bend of the North Dock is very well portrayed as are the small hotels, rooming
houses, pubs and brothels that made the Strand infamous. The abbreviation 'PH' depicts a
pub but not every bar is shown. There were a great number of illegal bars in this area.
Street numbers aren't a feature of this kind of map so it can be difficult to narrow down
a specific address or property. |
