The fields behind the workhouse were farmed quite heavily for over fifty years. Many of the workhouse inmates would have been put to work to grow vegetables for the workhouse kitchens.
The soil is full of the signs of the workhouse. Pieces of pottery with the Tawe Lodge stamp are often found. Clay pipe fragments are found everywhere, a sign of the popularity of tobacco and the fragile nature of the pipes!
