Swansea's later local Acts of Parliament

Up ]

The statutes often contain a wealth of additional information about a locality or community. The names of prominent individuals are often mentioned, as are placenames and other geographical information. They can also give an insight into everyday life, such as how local markets were run, or what sort of goods were being bought and sold.

Acts dealing with land or the large estates give an indication of where industrial development was about to take place or the problems associated with industrial growth. Some of the harbour Acts give schedules of tolls payable on imports giving an insight into the type of business conducted in a flourishing Victorian port.

Understanding the legislation that underpins a specific event often aids greatly in trying to understand subsequent action. You can save a great deal of time by consulting any related legislation that may have a bearing on your research topic.
